I have created this LiveJournal in hopes of letting people know about my trip to New Zealand. For those who do not know, I was awarded the Phillips Travel scholarship to expand my project, called "Gender Lessons" abroad. Here is a blurb about my project:
My project, Gender Lessons, investigates how gender is taught to children by their peers, parents and complete strangers. I utilize phototherapy for this investigation, which requires people to reenact memories as I photograph it. So far, people have contributed memories ranging from a boy wearing his grandmother's lipstick to a child being raised two different genders, each in a different country. After reenacting the memories and looking at the resulting photographs, most participants gained at least gained a clearer recollection of the memory but many realized what role the gender-endowed memories play in their current association with gender and their overall identity. Currently, society believes in a socio-biological definition of gender, meaning that our genes set women and apart, and those boundaries can never be crossed. I, like so many others, do not fit those guidelines, and to, counteract them, I want my project to show how gender concepts come from daily interactions with others and can change over the years. To see just how gender can change vary, I want to take Gender Lessons to different countries. If socio-biology is correct, then gender standards should be universal. I want to see if that is true. I will start the expansion of my project this summer in New Zealand. My university contacts abroad will help me find participants and further explore the limitless expanse gender fills.
I also plan to do a photo essay on the country itself, focusing on the youthful aspects associated with its economy, masculinity, geology, politics and recreation.
As you can tell, this trip is fueled by photos, and I hope to show my work as I go, pending this site is nice to photography.
Anyways, I hope my entries are captivating enough to garner your responses. Your love and support is always welcome.
Finally, if any New Zealanders are reading this and want to help me out, let me know. I need participants, actors and guides. I can't wait to meet you, Kiwis!
